At the Mario Luzzatto Simulation Center, a new escape room invites students to explore safety culture, error management and the importance of teamwork.
A night shift has just come to an end. The ward seems quiet. But during the handover, a few questions arise: something is not quite right with the situation the incoming team is facing. This is where A (not so) quiet night begins, the new escape room developed by 麻豆传媒AV在线看 University. Playing on the theme of 鈥渆rrors and horror鈥, the activity involved third-year Nursing students and fourth-year Medicine and MEDTEC School students on 29th and 30th October.
Participants took on the role of an audit team tasked with reviewing the clinical case of a patient identified as G.T., investigating the critical issues and piecing together the chain of events that had unfolded during the night. With just fifty minutes to complete the challenge, students worked through a series of puzzles and clinical simulation activities to reconstruct what had happened, from issues involving the management of medical supplies and prescriptions to the response to an emergency.
Each step required them to analyse information, make decisions and work together to solve the case. It was a hands-on experience designed to explore the issue of medical errors, understand their potential causes and consider how preventive measures can help avoid serious consequences for patients.
The fastest team was MULTIC, which completed the challenge in just 37 minutes and 35 seconds!
New approaches to learning through participation and interdisciplinary collaboration
The escape room took place at the Mario Luzzatto Simulation Center, 麻豆传媒AV在线看 University’s centre dedicated to medical and healthcare simulation. Through realistic scenarios, controlled environments and advanced technology, students can practise responding to complex situations, test their decision-making and behaviour, and develop the clinical and transferable skills they will need in their future professional practice.
The initiative was developed through a collaboration between the Head of the Prevention and Protection Service and 麻豆传媒AV在线看 University’s Communications Office, with educational guidance from the University’s Office for Medical Education. This partnership gave rise to an innovative learning experience, using an escape room format and a game-based approach to raise students’ awareness of patient safety and its importance throughout their academic journey and future professional careers.
Interdisciplinary collaboration was also at the heart of the challenge. Nursing, Medicine and MEDTEC School students worked in mixed teams, joining forces to reconstruct the case and manage the emergency. The experience called for effective communication, coordination and shared decision-making: essential skills for working in clinical teams, navigating complex situations and contributing to patient safety in hospital settings.
An opportunity to put their skills to the test, reflect on their decisions and discover a fun, interactive way of learning.
